About the University

The University Clermont Auvergne is brand new: it has been founded on January first 2017 with the merger of the two universities of Clermont-Ferrand, both created in the 16th century. With 35 000 students, among whom 4600 are of foreign nationalities, 900 are PhD students, around 1300 researchers and professors-researchers, 44 research centers, this new dynamic attractive and responsible university is open on its social, economic and cultural surroundings, on its territories and on the world. In 1976, The School of Economics, involved in the REPESEA program, designed a niche strategy of international development and thus the master program in Development Economics emerged (currently with different specializations – e.g. public finance, health economics), which is taught in English. The research centre CERDI (Centre for Studies and Research on International Development) was established in the same year. CERDI is affiliated with the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research). This affiliation is a recognition of research excellence and it welcomes additional researchers in the field of international development economics.

It has received the i-site label in 2017 ! I_site : initiative science innovation territories economy. This label is granted by the french governement to increase international exposure of the university site through a dynamic of excellence. (the label in itself is of great value because it identifies the site as one of the main ones in France, it also guarantees a grant that will help the University to see projects through to the end.

The objective is to link higher education and research actors more closely with their socio economic environment. This will be achieved by creating stronger ties with local and regional firms and authorities (Michelin, Limagrain..), but also by bringing forward the areas of strength which identify the site.

Based on every field of knowledge, UCA  will pursue an innovative and creative policy in terms of initial and professional trainings, research, professional integration of its students, while playing a major role in the city and on the international scene.

Clermont-Ferrand has become a member of the UNESCO Global network of learning cities
